Hello Hivers,
Welcome to the March Stampers By The Dozen Blog Hop. This month it was my turn to choose our theme. I decided we should share different techniques using some type of Embossing and/or creating Backgrounds. I am sharing 3 different ways you can Heat Emboss and get the Faux Leather look.
This is going to be a long post. I am adding step by step written instructions with photos and measurements for each project.
These are my four projects.
First up I have a medium sized purse with Faux leather sides, handle, and top flap.
Let me start by giving you the measurements for this purse. I adapted measurements from a tutorial by Intatwyne Designs. Click HERE to see my post with the Large Purse tutorial and link to Angelina's video tutorial.
This is what you will need:
DSP 5" x 5" (x2)
Cardstock:
Handle - 7.5" x 1" (x1) Score at 0.75" on each end
Sides - 7.5" x 5" (x2) Score Long Side at 5". Score 0.50" on each end of Short Side
Front & Back - 9" x 5" (x2) Score at 5" on Long Side
Top/Front Flap - 5" x 5" (x1) Score at 1" and 3"
Now, on to the "How to" of the
Faux Leather Technique #1:
Step 1: Stamp VersaMark all over the surface. (I added my Tear & Tape before doing this so that it would adhere better.)
Step 2: Pour Clear Embossing Powder over the entire surface with VersaMark on it. (You can work in small sections if you wish.)
Step 3: Take your Bone Folder and draw on the leather pattern of your choice. Be sure to press hard enough to remove the Clear Embossing Powder. Turn over and tap off excess powder.
Step 4: Heat Emboss the area with the Clear Embossing Powder. Repeat steps for each piece needed to complete your project. Put everything together and enjoy.
Faux Leather Technique #2
Here I have a Faux Leather Wallet. I tweaked a tutorial that I found on Splitcoast Stampers. This wallet can hold a gift card, money, or anything else that is about that size.
Step 1: Dry emboss your cardstock using the embossing folder of your choice. You may need to flip cardstock and emboss the other end depending on the size of your project.
4.25" x 7.25" cardstock
Step 2: Sponge coordinating ink over the entire embossed surface, trying only to cover the raised portion of the pattern.
Step 3: Stamp VersaMark all over the surface. (You can work in small sections if you wish.)
Step 4: Pour Clear Embossing Powder over the entire surface with VersaMark on it.
Step 5: Heat Emboss the area with the Clear Embossing Powder. Repeat steps for each piece needed to complete your project. Put everything together and enjoy.
Here are some photos to help you complete the Faux Leather Wallet.
2" x 3" (x2) Score every 1/2" on long side.
Adhere to back of the main panel of wallet. I added coordinating DSP to the back of my Heat Embossed cardstock.
Fold up cardstock to adhere the other side of the side pieces. Round the corners of the top portion of wallet (optional).
Decorate and enjoy. (Note: You will need a strong adhesive to add a magnetic or velcro closure.) I used the Fine-Tip Glue Pen to adhere one half of my velcro closure to the Heat Embossed cardstock.
I had some extra cardstock that I had embossed so I made this cute little Lip Balm Holder. It was made in the exact same way as the wallet. 4" x 4.25" for holder and 3" x 1" (x2) for sides.
Faux Leather Technique #3
Here I have added my Faux Leather piece to a card. It adds interest, texture, and dimension to the background .
Step 1: Lightly spray cardstock with water on both sides.
Step 2: Crumple up cardstock. Carefully un-crumple and crumple again.
Step 3: Carefully un-crumple cardstock, flatten it out and let it dry. Once it is dry, ink raised surfaces with coordinating color. (You can use your heat tool to speed up the drying process.)
Step 4: Stamp VersaMark all over the surface.
Step 5: Pour Clear Embossing Powder over the entire surface with VersaMark on it.
Step 6: Heat Emboss the area with the Clear Embossing Powder. Repeat steps for each piece needed to complete your project. Add it to your project and enjoy.
Here's another look at all four projects together.
